SALUTE TO YOUTH AUDITIONS
Thank you for your interest in our Salute to Youth auditions! This year we invite talented young musicians from throughout the state to audition for the opportunity to be featured as a soloist with our orchestra.
ELIGIBILITY
- Five student musicians aged 6 to 18 will be selected to perform at our Salute to Youth concert in April 2024.
- In addition to applications from vocalists and instrumental musicians, we are accepting applications from student conductors.
- Soloists will be selected in age categories on the basis of their musical skill.
- Applicants may audition in subsequent years, potentially being selected to perform more than once with the symphony, as long as they have aged into a higher age group.
REPERTOIRE
- For instrumental musicians, audition music should be a movement of a concerto or composition for solo instrument with orchestra.
- Vocalists may audition with a classical vocal piece accompanied by orchestra.
- The musical selection should not exceed 10 minutes.
- Consideration will be given to recent performance of the piece by our orchestra, and our access to music.
- Works selected for concert performance may require cuts to be determined in consultation with the student’s teacher and the AFS conductor.
APPLICATION, ENTRY FEE, & LINK TO VIDEO AUDITION
Application, Entry Fee ($25), & Link to Video Audition (part of application) are due by January 11th, 2024
- Live auditions for finalists will be held on January 18th, 2024
- Applicants will access the application and post their video audition link to our website at www.afsymphony.org.
- Audition video will showcase the piece the student hopes to perform with us.
- The name and age of the student and the title and composer of the work should be stated by the student or presented as a title page at the beginning of the audition video.
- Adjudicators will review submissions, and those selected to move to in-person auditions will be notified by January 15th, 2024.
- In-person auditions will be held at MJ Pianos in American Fork the evening of January 18th, 2024.
- Bring two copies of your music for our adjudicators. Performers will provide their own accompanist.
YOUTH CONDUCTOR AUDITIONS
- For youth conductor audition videos, the student will conduct Hungarian Dance #5 by Johannes Brahms from a recording of their choice.
- At the start of the audition tape, the student will provide his/her name and age, plus a few minutes of what they might say in an introduction of the piece to an audience.
- The video should be 3-5 minutes long.
- Finalists for conductor will be invited to conduct the American Fork Symphony in rehearsal. The choice of youth conductor will be made by members of the symphony.
- If selected, the youth conductor will conduct Hungarian Dance #5 with the American Fork Symphony at our Salute to Youth concert.
REHEARSALS AND CONCERT DATE
- Symphony rehearsals for this concert will be held on Saturday mornings beginning March 9th at American Fork Junior High.
- Soloists will be assigned two specific rehearsals to attend, plus dress rehearsal on April 27th.
- Our 2024 Salute to Youth concert will be held on April 29th, 2024.
